Home remedies for dry eyes

Dry eyes are a common concern that can lead to itching, irritation and redness. Dry eyes may also lead to severe eye conditions if not dealt with properly. There are various home remedies you can try to reduce the problem of dry eyes. Keep reading to know about them.

Try Blinking

Spending a lot of time looking at a computer or laptop screen, can make you blink not as frequently as normal. Blinking helps spread tears evenly over the surface of the eye, hence if you don’t blink enough, your eyes may become dry. To prevent this from happening, try blinking intentionally every few seconds while you’re using your laptop or any other digital device.

Massaging the eyelids

Gently massaging your eyelids can help stimulate the oil glands that produce tears, and improve the flow of tears onto the surface of the eye. Just apply gentle pressure to your eyelids, moving in a round motion.

OTC eye drops

Your doctor can prescribe eye drops that can provide temporary relief from dry eye symptoms. Look for drops that are preservative-free, as preservatives can sometimes irritate the eyes. You should use eye drops as prescribed by and remember to not overuse them.

Use a warm compresses

Applying a warm compress to your eyes can be beneficial in stimulating the oil glands that produce tears, and improve the flow of tears onto the surface of the eye. To make a warm compress, simply soak a clean cloth in warm water and wring out the excess. Hold the warm cloth over your closed eyes for a few minutes, repeating as necessary.

Stay hydrated

Drinking enough water throughout the day keeps your eyes hydrated and prevents dryness. You should drink around 8 glasses of water per day. Moreover excess caffeine and alcohol should be avoided as it can dehydrate the body.

Castor oil can help

Castor oil is a natural lubricant that moisturizes the eyes and reduces dryness. You can apply a small amount of castor oil to your eyelids before bed, being careful not to get any in your eyes.

Use aloe vera

Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory properties. It reduces redness and swelling in the eyes. Apply a small quantity of aloe vera gel to your eyelids. Avoid getting it in your eyes.

Eat foods with omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are known to be an important nutrient that can lessen inflammation in the eyes and rest of the body. Good sources of omega 3 fatty acids are fatty fish and fish oil capsules.

Try using a humidifier

Dry indoor air can contribute to dry eyes. A humidifier adds moisture back into the air and relieves dry eye symptoms. Be sure to clean your humidifier regularly to prevent the growth of bacteria or mold.

Get plenty of rest

If you’re feeling tired or stressed, your eyes may become dry and irritated. Taking frequent breaks throughout the day to rest your eyes leading to reduced dryness and improvement in overall eye health.
