Lawn Mowing Tips – Grass Cutting & Edge Trimming Guide

Mowing the lawn / grass is a task that requires sufficient knowledge and should be performed very carefully, taking into account some important things. An attractive lawn depends on how well it is kept. Lawn / grass mowing should be done at heights and frequencies that complement the grass growth habit. This results in a homogeneous dense turf that prevents weeds and supports the intended use of the turf. Mowing or mowing the grass to low has many negative consequences for the lawn. This weakens the grass, causing the turf to thin out, causing weeds to invade, making the lawn more susceptible to pests and possibly killing the lawn over time.

By following the simple recommended cutting heights for your type of grass, you can significantly improve the health and appearance of your lawn. By adjusting your lawn mower to a higher mowing with longer cut grass, you can help improve and maintain the health of your lawn and help eliminate weeds.

Lawn grass mowing is long and frequent

Regardless of the type of grass cutter, the lawnmower should always be adjusted for a longer cut. Too short a grass cut can stimulate weed growth by letting more light into the soil.

A good rule of thumb is to cut only one-third of the height of the grass per mowing. If your grass is overgrown, set the lawnmower to the highest possible setting by collecting the grass in a lawn mower or raking the leaves with a rake. Leave the lawn for a few days after mowing, and then mow the grass to the desired height.

Throwing mown grass

Many people choose to throw the cut grass in the trash. Cut grass can be a good source of nutrients, including nitrogen. Never collect cut grass, throw it in a compost pile or use it to create a new one. Alternatively, you can leave the grass box with the lawn mower and mow the grass without collecting it. The cut grass breaks down fairly quickly and will provide your lawn with valuable nutrients, reducing the need for fertilizer.

The recommended cutting height of lawn grass depends on the type of grass

Each type of grass requires a slightly different cutting height installed on your lawn mower. Use the following table to find the recommended mowing height for your lawn.

  • Zoisya Grass, Centipede Grass: 1-2 inches (25-51 mm)
  • Ryegrass: 1 1/2 – 2 inches (38 – 51 mm)
  • Bermuda grass: 1/2 – 1 inch (13 – 25 mm)
  • Curved grass: 1/4 – 1 inch (6 – 25 mm)
  • Buffalo, fescue, blue gram, tall grass: 2-3 inches (51-76 mm)
  • Carpet grass: 2-3 inches (5.1-76 mm)
  • Bahia: 2-4 inches (51-10.2 cm)
  • Floratam / st. Augustine: 2-4 inches (51-76 mm)

Pruning and repairing the edges of the lawn

As mentioned earlier, do not cut more than 1/3 of the height of the grass border. The most popular lawn mower is a trimmer that uses a nylon plastic cord that rotates at high speed, knocking down and mowing the grass. Despite the fact that only a string trimmer is popular, you will not be able to get clear boundaries, for this you will need a manual or mechanical lawn mower. Some string trimmers are equipped with interchangeable heads for horizontal and vertical cutting without the use of two separate tools.

When trimming the grass around the trees, wrap the protective part of the trunk around the base of the tree for protection. Damage to the cambium layer (under the bark of trees) can kill trees or cause serious damage. Also, cut the grass at least 12 inches (300 mm) from the base of the tree and surround it with mulch or bark chips.

The edges of the lawn can be trimmed manually with garden / grass shears (use scissors with long handles to get rid of back pain) and crescent-shaped lawn trimming, or with electric or gas trimming with a star blade for vertical trimming.

This work can be physically difficult, causing significant pain in the arms, legs and back. Take regular breaks or consider renting or buying an electric pruner for large gardens.

The optimal height of cut is determined by the nature of growth of a particular grass and the texture of its leaves, ie the length and width of the leaves. The survival of any grass depends on the formation of a suitable leaf surface for food production through photosynthesis. Too low a lawn / grass mowing removes too much grass area that provides food. Because the grass is literally starving, the lawn thins and looks poor. Conversely, too high a mowing can impair the appearance and usefulness of the treated area. No mowing height is best for all turf grasses; lawn mowers must be installed differently for each grass. Within the optimal range of mowing height, each type of grass will be healthier and will have a deeper root system, the higher the mown grass will be.
